Weckl's Live and Very Plugged In arrived in the mail today and I hope my jaw doesn't fall off from smiling so big. It's that good. And his drum sound is better than anybody's.
Good to see you again, Me2!

It's difficult to express how good Weckl's new live double CD is. I'm on the second disk now. And it only cost $14.99! I've been contemplating getting the Sun Ra Sextet Live at the Village Vanguard that's gathering dust at my local music store, a single CD for $17.99. Beaver Harris is the drummer and whereas I've heard of him, I've never heard him play.
I think if Weckl played on a Robert Plant album, he'd sound fine with Sting. Is it all that outboard gear or is it Weckl's deft touch on his Yamahas that make him sound so good? If I thought I could get some Recording Customs that'd sound that good I'd lose my current kit.

Weckl just did a clinic here on Tues....couldn't make it but had a friend make a very nice recording....He is very adamant about doing his own sound..PERIOD! He has an incredible ear for EQ'ing...almost not human! That combined with his incredible finesse makes it all the more gratifying to the listener..

It's not just on record that Dave gets all that fat compression and splendid nuance. I acquired a bootleg video from ______ and Dave's live sound was equal to his records, in a cavernous hall no less!
Weckl has EQ elephant ears, you are right on, sash, about that.

Yeah,Weckl says"I don't want anyone else in control of my sound because it's MY sound!" I remember the Akoustic Band coming through in '89. A couple of friends and I were standing right next to him watching him warm-up and sound check...Funny shit..He kept walking over to the monitor guy and tweaking knobs, calling out frequencies to diminish and this cat was lost. Weck was pissed...He probably got up 30 times to take care of his mix...I still laugh when I think about all of the stuff he was mumbling in between trips....funny but a reality..for him

Sashal, I am envious. I've yet to see Dave BUT I WILL. Did you get to stay that close for the Akoustic show? That must've been otherworldly. I'm playing Weckl's solo over and over from his new CD----from brushes to sticks to bliss in just 8 minutes.

Actually, I did watch from the side of stage next to him...They were pretty exhausted from doing an earlier show in Monterey. He was struggling a little(I say struggling by his standards!)an some of the material from Three Quartets..I actually have him saying "SHIT!" when he missed a big Chick dramatic downbeat at the end...you know CRASH....fill...CRASH,CRASH....space...CRASH! He was trying to find some humor though when a moth landed on one of his toms while he was almost sleeping during a long Chick intro...he simply reached over and flicked it to it's death...great finger technique,I might add!
